It’s difficult to think of the 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s and not think of Billy Thayer. He has been a mainstay in the Minnesota rock scene with bands like Knight Crawler, Arch Allies, and the Thayer Brothers Band. His hard hitting and stylistic drum solos makes him a fan favorite.

MND: How did you end up in the Minnesota music scene? Are you from here?
Billy: I am from crystal/ newhope which are both suburbs of Minneapolis
MND: What are some of the artists you have worked with that we may know?
Billy: Knight Crawler-Arch Allies-Thayer brothers band-Badfinger (had a cup of coffee with them)
MND: What is your drumming education?
Billy: Self-taught, music school, teacher? I basically learned from watching my older brothers play. I did learn quite a bit in school band in which I played in all of them-concert, orchestra ,jazz etc..
MND: Who are your top 3 influences and why?
Billy: Ian Paice from Deep Purple Purple – love just about everything he does. He’s very fast and very cool. John Bonham- Loved his beats, sound and power. My brother Johnny-watching him play when I was very young was beyond cool.
MND: Where are you playing? Where can we see you locally?
Billy: I’ve been filling in with a variety of bands and I try to keep the gigs updated through social media and such.
MND: Are you a teacher?
Billy: I have taught in the past and would certainly welcome anyone who would want to pick my brain or just learn drum technique and or beats the right way (posture, stamina etc..)

MND: What are you using for gear? What is your set up?
Billy: I have a plethora of kits ranging from Rogers, Ludwig, Tama, Yamaha. Right now I’ve been using my old Ludwig kit from 7th grade. Very simple, but very effective. My set now consists of my old Ludwig kit: 14″super sensitive Ludwig snare (b), 12 (c),13 (d),16″(e) toms 22″kick (a) with a DW double pedal. Cymbals (all Sabian): 22″ ride cymbal (B), 18 (C),17 (D),16″ (E) crash cymbals, and 15″ (A) hi-hats.
MND: What style of music do you like to play the most?
MND: Are you a versatile drummer?
Billy: I like to think so. I certainly listen to all styles and love the way all the different drummers play, aggressive , tasty and likeable .
MND: What recordings (Discography, if any) can we find some of your work on?
Billy: Knight Crawler had done a few CD’s and YouTube is always one way to find things for sure
MND: What is your best musical experience?
Billy: Touring in the 90’s and 2000’s with Knight Crawler.
MND: What is your favorite drumming experience?
Billy: Placing in Knut Koupees drum contest, or my high school band Gibraltar winning the 1st round at the civic center battle of the bands in 1981 and being endorsed by Sabian cymbals for well over 20 years!
