On this episode Paul “The Rög” Rogne talks with Minnesota Drummer Steve Roehm. Steve is a drummer, Vibraphone player often performing at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport or with one of two main musical groups: The New Standards and The Neighborhood Trio.
Like so many working musician’s Steve has been financially impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 virus “Stay In Place” order. He hasn’t let this set back – hold him back, creatively he is still rehearsing and giving Skype lessons on the drums and Vibraphone but it’s his ingenuity that is keeping his busy.
This past December Steve introduced the “The Roehmeo” (Metaliphone) – the Roehmeo is a 7-note mallet percussion instrument. The bars you strike are made from brushed aluminum, giving the instrument a mellow, metallic tone. What makes this percussion instrument unique is it’s tuned to a G minor blues scale. Each Roehmeo is hand-crafted, custom built and tuned by Steve. He is selling these handcrafted instruments for $150 and they are available at www.steveroehm.org.
We also talk about Steve’s history including his college years where his roommate was Jason Sutter and fellow alumni Jim Riley and Keith Carlock.
